Your brakes are the one system on your car you never want to gamble with, and summer is when they get tested. A loaded car, a long highway drive to the lake, stop-and-go on I-270, all of it asks more of your brakes than a normal commute. The good news is that brakes almost always warn you first. At ER Autocare, our ASE-certified team handles brake repair across our four Columbus, OH area shops, and we'd rather catch a worn pad now than have you find out on a road trip. Here are the brake warning signs to watch and feel for before you head out.
The most common brake warning signs are a high-pitched squeal when you brake, a grinding noise, a soft or pulsing brake pedal, the car pulling to one side, longer stopping distances, or a brake light on the dash. Any one of them is worth an inspection.
Some of these you hear, some you feel, and some show up on the dashboard. We'll walk through each so you know what your car is trying to tell you.
That high-pitched squeal isn't random. Most brake pads have a small metal tab built in that starts to squeal when the pad gets thin, on purpose, as an early warning. It's the cheapest signal your car gives you, because catching it here usually means a simple pad replacement before anything else gets damaged. If you hear it on the way to work every morning, don't wait for your road trip to deal with it.
A grinding or metal-on-metal sound means the pads are worn out and the metal backing is biting into the rotor. This is the one to take seriously immediately. Every stop you make is now chewing up the rotor, which turns a pad job into pads and rotors. It also means your stopping power is already compromised, which is the last thing you want with a full car on the highway.
Pay attention to how the pedal feels. A pedal that sinks toward the floor or feels spongy can point to air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak in the system. A pedal that pulses or vibrates under your foot usually means warped rotors, often from heat. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which is why it needs to be checked and occasionally replaced. If the feel has changed, have it looked at.
A few more signs round out the list:
None of these fix themselves, and all of them get worse under the extra load of summer driving.

Brakes work by turning motion into heat, and summer driving makes a lot of it. A car packed with people and gear weighs more, so the brakes work harder to stop it. Long downhill stretches and stop-and-go highway traffic build heat that can fade worn brakes or warp tired rotors. Add Ohio summer temperatures and a brake system that was borderline in spring can become a real problem on a July trip. A quick inspection before you leave is cheap insurance. The NHTSA treats brake maintenance as core to vehicle safety for good reason.
When you bring your car in, we don't just glance at it. We measure how much pad is left, check the rotors for wear and warping, inspect the calipers and brake lines, and test the brake fluid. Then we tell you what we find and what actually needs attention, and we leave the unnecessary wrenching behind. If you need brake work, it's backed by our 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty, and we can keep you moving with a free loaner car or shuttle while we handle it. The Car Care Council recommends regular brake checks as part of normal maintenance, and a pre-trip brake inspection is the perfect time.

Squealing, grinding, a soft or pulsing pedal, pulling to one side, or longer stops are the common signs. A brake inspection measures pad and rotor wear so you know for sure.
No. Grinding usually means the pads are gone and metal is hitting the rotor, which cuts your stopping power and damages the rotor. Have it looked at right away.
At least once a year, and before a long road trip. Many drivers have it done at each oil change or tire rotation so nothing sneaks up on them.
It depends on the vehicle and how you drive. Stop-and-go Columbus traffic wears pads faster, so go by the warning signs and a regular inspection rather than a fixed number.
Yes. We offer free loaner cars and a shuttle, same-day service on most brake jobs, and flexible financing if you need it.
