Signs your exhaust needs repair
- Louder than usualA rumble or roar usually means a hole or a failed joint in the muffler or pipes.
- Rattling underneathLoose heat shields and broken hangers rattle, especially at idle or over bumps.
- Exhaust smell in the cabinExhaust contains carbon monoxide. A smell inside the car should be checked right away.
- Check engine lightOxygen sensor and catalytic converter codes often trace back to the exhaust system.
- Lower fuel economy or powerA restricted or leaking exhaust can affect how the engine runs.
- Visible rust or hanging pipesCorroded pipes and broken hangers can let the system sag or drag.
What the exhaust system does
The exhaust system carries hot gases from the engine to the back of the car. Along the way, the catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions, oxygen sensors help the engine computer adjust the fuel mixture, and the muffler quiets the noise.
Because it carries carbon monoxide, an exhaust leak is a safety issue, not just a noise problem, especially if it is near the front of the car or the cabin.

Why Ohio winters wear out exhaust systems
Road salt and moisture attack the exhaust from the outside, while condensation that forms on short trips corrodes it from the inside. That is why mufflers and pipes on cars driven mostly around town often rust through first.
Longer drives that fully warm the exhaust, and an inspection when you notice a new sound, help catch problems early.

Frequently asked questions
Is it dangerous to drive with an exhaust leak?
It can be. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, so a leak that lets fumes into the cabin needs prompt repair.
Why is my car suddenly so loud?
A hole in the muffler or a failed pipe joint is the most common cause. Rust is usually behind it.
What causes a rattle under the car?
Often a loose heat shield or a broken exhaust hanger. Both are usually straightforward fixes.
Can an exhaust problem turn on the check engine light?
Yes. Oxygen sensor and catalytic converter faults are common exhaust-related codes.
